What Is The Goal Of World Clean and Green Week?
There is only one Earth, and taking care of the planet and the environment is one of the best things anyone can do for future generations. Because of the continuing danger and harm to nature brought about by rapid human development, World Clean and Green Week was established to help encourage everyone to incorporate environmentalism into their daily routines.
The History of Clean and Green Week
Early Waste Management
Before industrialization and rising populations, human waste that communities generated was at a more manageable level. For long periods in history, most wastes were biodegradable, which meant they could be released back into the ground with limited negative impacts on the environment. This was also a period before overproduction and the onset of predominantly single-use items. Most objects were made of metal or glass, making them reusable, which led to less waste.
Waste management has always been a part of human communities. Some ancient civilizations practiced ritual communal burning, where they gathered the entire community and burned waste collectively. Of course, with the amount of waste modern-day society produces, this will not be feasible today.
The Industrial Revolution
Due to developments in technology and science, more and more nations became industrialized. The onset of these technological advancements meant that it was easier to mass-produce products and household items. More factories popped up, which meant stable employment for many, which then led to stability and rising populations in urban centers.
Larger populations concentrated in specific areas resulting in a build-up of waste. The lack of modern waste management regulations meant that trash accumulated more and more in areas that should have been waste-free.
Certain inventions, such as plastic, were also a huge change. As plastic is lighter than glass and easily moldable, it has become a preferred substitute for glass items. Mass production of plastic products and their use in other practical situations led to an increase in waste human societies produced.
Cholera Outbreak of the 19th Century
Because of the build-up of waste and poor sanitation, a cholera outbreak occurred in England. Social reformer Edwin Chadwick argued for a better waste management system to prevent diseases and support the health of the population. His sentiments were included in the 1842 report “The Sanitary Condition of the Laboring Population.”
Modernity and Pollution
Although proper standards were developed for waste management, further technological advancements and progress resulted in harmful effects on the environment. Fossil fuels, industrial mining, commercial farming, and overfishing are only some of the biggest causes of environmental damage. This has led to harmful effects on the environment, affecting nature, wildlife, and the human population.
Environmentalism in the Philippines
The Philippines is a country rich in natural resources and wildlife. This humble archipelago is home to some of the world’s most beautiful forests, mountains, rivers, lakes, and beaches. The country has not escaped unscathed, and the pristine natural landscapes and waters also sustained pollution and environmental harm.
In 1990, the United Nations Environment Program partnered with the Australian headquarters of Clean Up the World to establish World Clean-Up Day in September. In relation to this, the Philippines have been participating in a Clean and Green Program initiated by the Earthsavers Movement and hosted by the DENR-PAWB.
Three years later, Philippine President Ramos signed a proclamation solidifying the Filipino people’s commitment to caring for the environment. This proclamation declared the observance of Clean and Green Week in September, from the 17th to the 23rd. This same proclamation also declared September as National Clean-Up Month.
Since then, the Philippines has continued to encourage sustainability and good environmental practices in the community. As the threat of the climate crisis, climate change, and environmental concerns worsen, it has become essential that Filipinos continue to practice and support clean and green initiatives and programs.
The Goal of Clean and Green Week
World Clean and Green Week campaigns for the general public to protect and care for the environment. The emphasis aims at promoting a lifestyle to support a more environmentally-conscious mindset. The average individual may promote and practice small acts of environmental protection, but when society collectively participates in an environmental program, the effects compound and create a bigger positive impact. As more people become environmentally conscious, they can bring a new vision of a healthier and cleaner world to life.
How to Participate in World Clean and Green Week
Clean and green practices can start small in your own home. Even young children can be taught simple efforts, with parents and adults leading by example and training them in green practices. You can also branch out and join an organization that is involved in projects that serve to maintain and protect our natural resources.
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
Children are taught the three Rs from a young age: Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle. This concept is easy to remember and to practice at home and at school.
Reduce the waste you produce. Making less waste means there is less waste to clean up. Switch to products that are reusable instead of ones that are single-use items only. Refilling a water bottle and using tote bags instead of plastic shopping bags are two simple ways to reduce waste. You can also be more mindful of the things you buy. Opt for products in the type of packaging that can be cleaned and used for something else.
To reuse means finding a new way to use the items you have. Repurposing them or giving them away to someone else who will use them more than you is also a way to practice this concept. Old shirts and towels can be cut up and reused as rags. Glass jars can be cleaned and used for storage.
Recycling is something that is often supported by the private sector or by the government. Some items, like paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles can be recycled and turned into something else. Segregate these items and send them to recycling centers to prevent them from going directly to landfills. A myriad of products is made from recycled materials. There are now clothing, towels, and bags made from recycled plastic bottles. There are also several companies that make paper from recycled materials as well. And once processed, aluminum cans can be used as material for other items as well.
Plant Trees
Trees do so much to protect the environment. They help prevent flooding and land erosion, they provide fruits and shade, and they absorb the carbon dioxide we produce. There are several parks and protected areas that host tree-planting events. Planting trees can be a great family activity you can do, especially when you do it in areas supporting the preservation of forests.
Be Energy Efficient
Switch out your light bulbs to LED lights. Remember to switch off and unplug electronic devices that are not in use. If you can do so, switch to solar energy in your home. All these will reduce the amount of energy you use, which is beneficial to the planet in the long run.
