The Davao City – UP Mindanao Sports Complex is big, 20-hectare wide project which first broke ground in 2015 as a joint project between the government of Davao City and the University of the Philippines Mindanao.

A Game Changer for Davao Sports Enthusiasts

By the first month of the next year, the construction of the sports complex was already in full swing and by September, the indoor multi-purpose gym was nearing completion along with the stadium and athletic oval nearing the completion of its first phase.

The project was expected to finish in time to serve as the venue for the 2019 Palarong Pambansa – an annual multi-sport event in the Philippines. Although not yet fully complete, the sports complex was already built enough to host the event and was a successful venue for the event – having a jam-packed venue with approximately 20,000 people based on official estimates.

The sports complex was also used to host the week-long 2019 Davao Region Athletic Association (DAVRAA) Meet. With over 4,000 athletes flooding to Davao to compete in the games and perform demonstrations, the Davao sports complex truly was bustling with such a huge crowd.

However, like many other projects worldwide, the construction of the Davao sports complex also stopped when the pandemic hit. Construction has slowed down by a considerate amount, though it has been a while since it has continued and thus is very near completion as of May 2023.

According to Mikey Aporteda, head of the Sports Development Division of the Davao City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO), the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) recently paid a visit to the sports complex last April 30 in order to inspect the state of the facilities.

The visit was headed by PSC chairman, Richard Bachmann, and they have concluded the inspection by saying that the Davao sports complex is very near its completion, with only having to “polish” some more before it becomes open to the public.

Based on the interview on Aporteda, they have expressed that the people can look forward to the stadium being open to the public very soon.

Located in the heart of Davao City, the Davao City-UP Sports Complex is currently the biggest sports complex in Mindanao and can be found in Mintal. With so many promising sports facilities, the completion of this sports complex has been awaited by many sports enthusiasts, especially those residing in Mindanao.
